Seismic metadata capture and analysis

Capturing seismic metadata is complex but important. As the Society of Exploration Geophysics released different seismic formats and revisions of seismic formats, the volumes, types and importance of metadata have become an important part of a robust seismic data management system.

Tape Ark has over 25 years of experience and proprietary technology to capture and organize key metadata components from various sources including navigation, support and seismic trace data (be it field, processed or intermediate formats).

Seismic expertise

Tape Ark has extensive seismic and well data expertise in metadata management and has tools to extract and host large volumes of seismic metadata at scale. Tape Ark has experience in all forms of metadata capture including from formats like SEGA, SEGB, SEGC, SEGD, SEGY, UKOOA, LAS, LIS, etc. (see complete list of formats here)

Collecting data is only one part of the process when managing metadata for seismic. The work required to identify inaccuracies or inconsistencies, and to correct these using AI and ML are a core expertise of Tape Ark.

Tape Ark has been working with PPDM and OSDU for over a decade and through our metadata driven process, we can consolidate all of the metadata into a single database. This database can be used with numerous online data visualization systems including Osokey, SLB’s Prosource and numerous other toolsets. Our metadata processing systems allow for the delivery of verified and QC’d metadata that can support big data analysis, machine learning applications and artificial intelligence use cases.

Metadata integrity for seismic data

Tape Ark has built toolsets that allow for the capture of hundreds of millions of attributes from seismic and well data at scale. As we ingest seismic data from tape or disk, our core focus is to ensure that the data remains accurate and up to date. Tape Ark has the capability to interrogate any byte location in any file and any format, allowing for both standard metadata capture and bespoke solutions.

Seismic metadata extraction tools

Tape Ark has built scalable, cloud based toolsets that allow for multiple petabytes of data to be parsed using Lambda and serverless functions that can generate massive volumes of metadata at the click of a button, no matter how large the datasets are. The tools work on all major clouds (Azure, AWS and Google) and can generate metadata conforming to OSDU and PPDM compliant databases.

Metadata management in the cloud

Tape Ark has designed .json, .csv, and database format metadata extraction and sidecar files that allow for the liberation of the largest datasets on the planet into the cloud that are easy to consume, access or share. Because we work at scale, Tape Ark has been responsible for some of the largest seismic data metadata extraction projects around the world.

Given cloud storage systems are ideal for large volumes of data, machine learning and AI applications, Tape Ark spent considerable time ensuring that our metadata extraction is done fast, accurately, and with an error correction process that allows for multiple passes of the data to build your metadata catalogues, without the need to start over each time you make new decisions about what you want to capture.

The Maverick Mindset
Knowledge is power – but only if the knowledge is accessible. To move forward we must look back, understand the data we have and start thinking about how to utilize it – that is a big data frame of mind.

A Welcome to Country

Tape Ark was founded and proudly grown from an Australian based company to an international success.

Tape Ark acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia and recognise their continuing connection to land, sea and community. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and future, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
