Expansion of Key Talking Points:
1. RISKS OF AGEING TAPE
“Did you know that tape has a finite life and that most tape drives are currently not supported by the manufacturers?”
Deeper Details: Tape manufacturers provide a warranty on their media, but that warranty firstly requires you (the customer) that you did not mistreat the media, and secondly, only provides for a replacement tape as compensation. This means that you get a blank tape, but lose your data. No 11×9’s of durability.

2. RETENTION RISKS
“Did you know that a single tape can have data from different retention periods, making it very high risk and almost impossible to remove data from your collection when it is on tape?”
Deeper Details: Despite popular belief, marking a file as deleted in your backup software does not actually delete the file. It stays on the tape until the tape is disposed of in its entirety. This means that you are likely retaining data in some cases after you are legally allowed to.

3. CLOUD COST ADVANTAGE
“Did you know that cloud storage has had over 60 price decreases while cloud storage has had over 60 price increases”
Deeper Details: The CEO of iron Mountain (William Meaney) has been quoted as “doing his inflation happy dance” because inflation allows Iron Mountain to charge more for their services without justifying it to their customers.

4. CLOUD’S SUSTAINABILITY EDGE
“Did you know that our cloud storage is 100% renewable energy based, while the tape storage industry is 20 years from becoming carbon neutral, and still use vans to deliver tapes?”
Deeper Details: One of the largest players in the tape storage industry has published that they will not be carbon neutral for deceased. Only 10% of their vehicle fleet is electric. It is a dirty business.

Expansion of Common Objections:
Objection: “My costs for tape storage are pretty low, so it’s not worth exploring as it will probably be more expensive in the cloud”
Acknowledgement: A common misconception, but when all of the associated costs are evaluated (colocation, power, infrastructure maintenance, legacy backup licensing), perceived costs can change significantly
Reframe: Reviewing the “All In” tape management costs will provide a clearer picture on cloud viability
Redirect: Tape Ark can consult with the customer and support their internal review
Objection: “We don’t even know what we have in storage anymore and it’s not worth finding out”
Acknowledgement: Many customers are paying for storage without knowing what they actually have, leading to indecision.
Reframe: Completing an audit of your physical data is an effective way to gather intelligence on what you have in storage.
Redirect: The Tape Ark Comprehensive Media Audit is a cost effective way to analyze current state, so informed decisions can be made.
Objection: “We backup to the cloud now, and the tapes are not accessed very often if at all”
Acknowledgement: Cloud migrated customers are typically still stuck with legacy data on tape, and have resigned the data to obsolescence.
Reframe: Older tape collections often benefit the most, as the metric for consumption shifts from per tape, to per gigabyte.
Redirect: Comparing offsite tape storage vs cloud storage (per Gb) & ingest costs will help determine real TCO – refer to Tape Ark.
Objection: “We backup to the cloud now, and the tapes are not accessed very often if at all”
Acknowledgement: Retaining tape data in the cloud is often more cost effective and unlocks a range of capabilities.
Reframe: Moving tape libraries into the cloud will optimise data retention management, data restore SLAs, and
provide greater visibility.
